| Every
breed is special, but some are more so than others. This is where
we feature our special needs dogs, and gaze hounds.
As representatives of the Southern California Whippet Association
(S.C.W.A.), we have successfully placed 38 whippets
over the last year...and 25 the year before. (See our 2003 SCWA Rescue Report)
NOTE TO POTENTIAL ADOPTERS

Many whippets are adopted directly from applications that we keep on file. These whippets never make it to this web page.
The whippet on the right was never on the web site - and was recently placed with an applicant we had on file.
Sending in an application form is very important if you are seriously looking for a sighthound to adopt.

RIVERDANCE, Greyhound, Male
Adoption Pending
River is a
7-8 month old
purebred (non-track AKC breeding) GREYHOUND puppy.
Silly, rambunctious, loving and simply stunning!
This is a gorgeous and loving young dog. He needs a secure yard, a family with the time to give him the training and attention he needs, and a bunch of kids to play with would be great. River Dance likes other dogs, so he would be a good second dog, especially for a female Greyhound or other sight hound or active breed dog.
Greyhounds are sprinters, they do not like to run for many miles, and spend most of their days relaxing, after a brisk romp. They are highly trainable, clean, quiet, NOT nervous dogs who bark at everything they see. This breed is not appropriate for staying outside all day. This is definitely a household breed, they need protection from the elements, regardless of their size. They ADORE their people. Looking for a good time? He's here, and his name is Riverdance. He is litter mate to Santa's Little Helper. His owner became critically ill, and is not expected to survive and there was no time for these puppies, so they were placed in rescue. It is relatively rare for us to have such young Greyhounds.

Blondy, Afghan Hound, Female
Blondy is a 4 year-old purebred Afghan hound.
She has a nice temperament and is a friendly girl who gets along with other dogs. She is is not excitable. She has lived in the company of cats.
She's a very sweet girl. She'll make an excellent companion or addition to a sight hound experienced home. That is our preference. She needs time attention and a secure yard. This is not a breed of dog to spend outside all day, and she *will* need grooming. She is very loving.
Please, if you simply love the looks of this dog, but do not know the breed, please look them up:
- AKC Afghan Hound Page
- Afghan Club Site
Homework makes the difference. There is not a much more exciting experience than one of these dogs on the end of a leash—it is magical, they float.

TIGGER, Greyhound, Male
TIGGER is an adult male 3 year old purebred Greyhound.
He came from central California where he was used in the field to chase hares and Coyotes. He is handsome, very people-oriented, and very loveable.
Tigger's feet, however, are made out of springs. He needs an enclosed yard and a forever home.
Do you think Tiggers are wonderful things? We do...

WINNIE, Greyhound, Female
Winnie is a 4 year old female Greyhound. She is a
slightly pink brindle...very unusual color and an extraordinary dog.
She is not a track dog.
Winnie is a superior athlete and when she feels that she is being neglected, she can clear any fence in a heart beat to find something to do. This makes her difficult to place, and she is very friendly, loving and playful, it is a shame. Do you have a secure yard and time to share with a beautiful, fun loving gal? She gets along with other dogs, especially males. We think she would probably chase your cat but she would also keep other pesky critters out as well. What a bonus. What a nice dog, she has been here too long. |
 |
HAL, Greyhound, Male
Hal is a 3 year old purebred Greyhound ex racer from the Tucson track.
Happy, gentle, agreeable and gets along with humans and other dogs. I am Lover Boy's room mate, although I enjoy the company of ladies also. I am used to smaller dogs. I am a great guy and deserve a great home. Looking for a big love dog? Someone to really test out that underused sofa you have?
I like going for walks, and snuggling. I am curious about everything and very gentle. I have the cutest ears, everyone tells me that |

TIGRA, Podengo Mix, Female
Tigra is a young (10 month old)
WHIPPET and PODENGO mix. She is
very sweet, very loving and very snuggly little girl. She came from a group of sight hounds rescued from Modesto.
She is about 16 lbs and will need a secure yard. She is the most submissive of the group and would need to have a gentle dog as a companion. We could snuggle her for hours ! She is adorable and her ears are very tall. An excellent companion for a neutered male Whippet or Greyhound, as she enjoys the company of both.

Mona-Mona, Long Dog, Female
Mona-Mona is what is called a Longdog which is a mixture of two or more sighthounds. (Sighthounds are dogs that hunt by sight, commonly the racing breeds).
She is about 5 years old. She is probably Whippet, Saluki and Deerhound - a mixture that is commonly called a Staghound. She is shorter than a Deerhound, more the size of a Saluki. She has a rough brindle coat. She is friendly, and loving with people and a good hunter.
She is a smart dog, she learns things very quickly.

Special Needs Whippet
CECIL, whippet, Male
Cecil is a registered purebred Whippet 13 years old. He spent all last winter in Highland Ca, where it is very cold as well as very hot. He was separated from his family and lived two blocks away from where they lived. No attempt to find him is apparent. The other dog came home, Cecil never did. He lived and was fed by the kindness of strangers who left food for him. He lived on the property of an abandoned home, and dug a sleeping hole. Animal control could not catch him and lost interest. The neighbor could touch him but when she reached for him, he slipped away.
Whippet Rescue was eventually called about 3 months ago, and we got this guy in a couple of hours. Cecil has been here, fostered by Patricia. Mary Cutherell has had surgery done on him for a bleeding tumor under his front arm, and it is healed, he has had some teeth removed. He has been dated and named by a tattoo on his inner thigh. We found it after the second time he was bathed, This was a dirty boy.
His fur is very coarse from living in the elements. He has had to deal with other feral dogs in the area who took his food from him, and his only problem living in a foster home is that he does not want to eat from a communal food bowl. He uses a doggie door. We expect, with proper nutrition and care, for his coat to become more whippet like and softer.
Yes, his former owners were notified. They said that Cecil got out and was hit by a car and killed. What can we say? When informed of the vet bills, they bowed out of his life forever.
Cecil is wary of strangers, but very loving when he gets to know you, and will come up on the sofa with me. He loves to be spoken to and walks on a leash. He is living communally. "CeCe" has picked his own spot on a small love seat and his nose is quite out of joint when another dog is there, he simply stands and stares...how whippet-like of him. "Yes, Cecil, I will tell them to move".
Do you have a secure yard, another Whippet and would like more? Do you enjoy a challenge and are you curious at the possibility of watching a terribly abandoned and neglected dog blossom? He will return your efforts with a lifetime of loyalty and love..that's what Whippies do.
As with Levin, we would prefer a home where he has a lot of human contact. Very young children are not a plus.

Special Needs Whippet
LEVIN, Whippet, Male
Former name Whippet Rescue # 11.
Rescued, 6 years ago, along with about 20 other Whippets from a warehouse puppy mill in central California.
These dogs were kept in deplorable conditions and bred regardless of any faults or health conditions. Levin has a genetic disorder called Macular Degeneration. He is blind.
It has been gradual, and he can still see some light.
He has been taught to walk, the language of humans, and gets along with other dogs.
Levin is now about 8 or 9. He is healthy and soft spoken and very loving. When he is inclined he has a real bark, but it is rare.
He enjoys riding in a car and has lived with a Laborador female and a kitten who occasionally wrestles him.
Levin has always been a sweet dog.
His owner would like to adopt a baby and the agency feels that a blind dog may not be a stable pet for a new, and very young child.
It is with deep regret that he has been returned to Patricia, his original foster.
He has lived in Tahoe, has gone hiking, camping and enjoyed the snow. He needs a secure yard, as he will follow a fence line and an open gate is an invitation to tragedy.
Our ideal home for this beautiful dog is someone who works at home or is retired. His former mommy worked away but left him with his friend the labby. Young children playing around him may be upsetting, although he has also successfully been in the company of children. Still, we would prefer a home where he would not be stepped on with children coming and going all day.
He feels most secure on a leash, and it is as though the leash is his "guardian". He does not use a leash all day when he is used to his surroundings. He uses a doggy door, and the words " keep going" let him know he still has a way to go to the yard. His former mom had malibu lights that showed him where to go. He will follow light. He needs a night light at night.
Loving, quiet, and beautiful, this dog has had Patricia's heart ever since the first time she saw him actually run, which more than likely, was his first romp in his short life. "He is welcome to stay here forever", says Patricia, "but if he was in a forever home, I would be more able to take in another special needs dog".
A gentle second dog or another Whippet as a "pilot" dog would be fine with Levin. Cats are not an issue, bunnies either. He has a great sense of humor, and can be as silly as any other Whippet.

ALEX, Greyhound, Male
Alex is a purebred Greyhound male,
born 4/04 at the Phoenix track. He's
very sweet, mild mannered and quiet. Alex has gotten along well with any roommate he has had. Very nice white boy with speckles, and a brindle patch. He would love to be the companion of another female Greyhound, or maybe just you....looking for a friend?
Greyhounds do not need more exercise or room than most other dogs, they need regular exercise and so do you, on the end of a leash you would BOTH look stunning.
Greyhounds curl into wonderful catlike balls on their floor beds. Most Greyhounds are not nervous and are generally quiet
This is a very nice boy.

DEX, Greyhound, Male
DEX is aproximately four years old. A young adult male, he was in the animal shelter with a pregnant female, (who had 6 puppies days later), and a youngster about 6 months old. They came from the same owner who simply turned in the whole family, and presumed to be related.
He loves his puppy and the female, and gets along with a German Shepherd and an Aussie here. He likes dogs and he loves people. He does not appear to be aggressive with smaller dogs. Initially very shy, he would come to within an arms length of you and when you reached for his head to pat him he would always cower. All the dogs were very thin. Dex is no longer cowering and looking forward to be rubbed and petted.
This is a good sized boy and his bone structure hints that he is probably 1/4 Irish Wolfhound. His coat is smooth. He truly IS a Gentle Giant of a dog, and would be fine as a second dog.

EROS, Greyhound, Male
Eros is a 3 year old purebred AKC registered Greyhound -
Eros is not a retired track dog. He has been around kids, and other dogs, he is familiar around poodles and poms as well as young Whippets and other Greys. He has never been around cats and we wouldn't put him with one.
He has been started in obedience and is a beautiful and loving dog.
Eros' owner had to leave the country suddenly and was unable to take him with, so he is waiting for a forever home with someone to be his companion once again.
This is a rare and beautiful animal

SO, Greyhound, Male
Racing in Arizona under the name System So, this three year old male is awesome. He is good natured, friendly, quiet and handsome. He's everything a Greyhound is supposed to be including very loving. This guy will make a stunning addition to any family looking to add a large breed dog. Remember, the biggest misconception about this breed is that they are very busy, need a lot of room to run and a lot of exercise. Moderate amounts of all, including leash walking will suffice. Many Greyhounds, with walking privileges, live happily ever after in apartments.
WE do not know about very young children or cats.
Remarkably handsome and genuinely sweet.
We would not be comfortable placing him with a cat and do not know if he has ever been around a baby. Older kids would be fine. Handsome, sweet So. Yes, you can change his name, he does not know this one, it is his racing name.
Greyhounds are companion animals, they love the company of people, they do not necessarily need large spaces or extreme amounts of exercise, they have two speeds...on and off. They are not nervous animals, and adjust surprisingly easy to new situations. This is a breed of dog that adores their owners. Clean, no doggy odor, and not big barkers, what more could you want?
Love big dogs? They love you too.. please be prepared to take this big boy to an obedience class and to leash walk him when he is not in his yard.

SISSY, Greyhound, Female
Sissy is a young adult, about 2 years old. She is a purebred Greyhound. She is a retired track racer.
Sissy is friendly, silly, outgoing, and very loveable. She gets along with her roommate who is a male. She is a pretty, exuberant and loving girl. Be prepared to take her to obedience classes and to keep her on a leash when she is not in the yard.
This is a breed of dog that adores their people and she is no exception. Always happy to see someone, she will be a cherished family pet. Older children will be just fine with Sissy although this happy girl will probably happily chase the cat.
Sissy is not a nervous girl and adjusted very quickly to being here and to her new roommate.
She regularly greets strangers with a wagging tail.
These are intelligent and clean animals and house train very quickly.

A Note About Our Rescue Dogs...
Some of these very sensitive dogs have been in more than one home and they have their own baggage.
Keep in mind that when we note a specific problem with the dog, we believe it is something that needs to be acknowledged and that the success of a placement really depends on the willingness of the adoptive home to be able to adapt and/or fulfill the dog's needs. To take a dog and then attempt to "change" it is really unfair to everyone. Some are simply perfect the way they are and some are not. The placement is perfect, however, when you respect the needs of the dog, and are realistic in your expectations. We will never knowingly place a difficult dog in a home unless you are well aware of what it may involve. |
A Whippet Adoption Success Story...

(from bottom to top): Stanley (Loo), Chyna, Tanner
All three were either in rescue, a shelter, or otherwise in need of a home.
Loo has since crossed the rainbow bridge (at age 13), but Chyna and Tanner are alive and well - living the good life in their forever home with two more friends: Zephyr and Merlyn. They are all exceptionally well-behaved whippets - and we can take no credit for it since they came to us house-broken, leash-trained and wonderful. We enjoy taking them to the Annual Pet Expo in Orange county where they are whippet ambassadors.
